Kannukku Kannaga

Director: S.Dayalan
Cast: Murali, Devayani, Vindhya, Raja, Vadivelu, Master Vasanth, Charuhasan.

Murali gets sister Devayani married to Raja despite a warning from the family astrologer that a male baby born to the duo would be the cause of Murali's death. As expected, Murali has quite a few narrow misses with death. So the astrologer modifies it later to, 'If the uncle is to live, the nephew should die.' Sounds like a film on the supernatural? Well, it's not. And for all the trouble taken to depict the astrologer as a sloka-quoting, pious, saintly man, he turns out to be wrong. And no apologies offered. The debutant director probably in a dilemma about the stand he should take regarding superstitious beliefs, takes the easy way out. He just does not take any stand.

Not that the film is a bad one. It has a neatly paced first half. Where Murali adept at playing these sad-man roles hovers between love for the sister and nephew, and fear of death. There are some fine touches and a convincing build-up to the scene where Raja leaves Murali's house in a huff with wife and kid. Incidentally, Raja and Vindhya appear as more credible characters. Finally, Devayani learning of the astrologer's prediction drinks a whole bottle of poison along with the son. Murali too is fatally wounded. But all three come out of it alive. 'A miracle,' says the doctor, as the audience looks on with disbelief. 'Love conquers all,' says a blurb on the screen. Take a few handkerchiefs when you go to see the film.
