Lovely

Director: Shakti
Cast: Kartik, Malavika, Monal, Manivannan, Vivek, Vinu Chakravarty, Mahanadi Shanker

A script that is racy with laugh-a-minute situations, a narrative style that doesn't allow one much time to think or ponder over the logistics and performances that are well coordinated - 'Lovely' is an unpretentious fun-film on the lines of 'Ullathai Allitha'. It may not be a great film - it never pretends to be - but it will drive your blues away.

Mahadevan's (Manivannan) traumatic experience as a child when his sister eloped with her lover, leaving him an orphan to fend for himself, makes him antagonistic to love and romance. So when Mahadevan's daughter Nivetha (Malavika), who is studying in a city college, falls in love with Chandru, she takes precautions to see that the matter doesn't reach her father's ears. Mahadevan's friend Panneer (Vinu Chakravarty) on a trip to the city, catches the two together, and decides to alert Mahadevan about his daughter's romantic escapade. He plans to send a photograph of Chandru to Mahadevan, but the quick-witted Chandru substitutes his photograph by that of his friend Azhageshan's (Vivek). The result - Azhageshan is bashed up by the rowdies sent by Mahadevan, each time the poor guy comes out on the road. All to his bewilderment!

Chandru manipulates situations and brings the two families close. So much so Chandru's family is invited to stay over at Mahadevan's for a function at the latter's house. Chandru makes such an impression on Mahadevan that the latter decides to get Nivetha married to him. Panneer enters the scene, and threatens to spill the beans. But Chandru thwarts every attempt to expose him till Panneer finds all his attempts backfiring on him, and is made to look like a lunatic. Finally truth does come out but Chandru manages to work his way back into Mahadevan's heart.

Kartik's penchant for comedy peps up the scenes, the actor coming out well in the emotional scene at the end. The contributions of Mahanadi Shanker, as the rowdy, Manivannan, and Vinu Chakravarty keep the proceedings lively. Here is a film where one welcomes Vivek's presence. The actor is hilarious as the fall guy who takes all the beatings from the rowdies, the hospital almost his second home. Malavika is just about adequate. Monal plays her cousin, and yet again lands in a role that gets her a couple of sizzling dance numbers, and a broken heart to nurse.
