Poonguyile |
With
two-hero subjects being the trend, Livingston and Udaya team together in 'Poonguyile',
a love triangle set in a rural milieu. Playing their romantic interest is
Vindhya. Introduced in 'Sanghamam' with Rehman, the actress did give a good
account of herself. But offers are not exactly pouring in by the dozen for this
actress, as is the case with her contemporaries. Hero Udaya introduced around
the same time with Vindhya has quite a few offers in his kitty. Like 'Kadhal
Sathi' directed by Kasturiraja, 'Kalakalappu' with Napoleon and Vijaylakshmi,
and 'Shakalaka Baby' directed by Ramanarayanan. The film is produced by
Jaimurugan,
who had earlier produced 'Sindbad' the Mansur Alikhan starrer, and also produced
and directed 'Roja Malare' which had Murali as the hero. Apart from producing
the film under his banner 'Manithan Cine Arts', Jaimurugan also pens its
story-screenplay-dialogue-lyrics, composes the music, and directs the film. And
Jaimurugan also plays a crucial role in the film.
Apart from Livingston, Udaya and
Vindhya, we have Manivannan, Vijay Kumar, Rithika, Vyapuri, Ilavarasi,
Satyapriya, and J. Lalitha in the cast. Vindya plays Mallika the only daughter
of a wealthy zamindar Muthusamy Gounder who is respected and feared by the
villagers. Udaya is her cousin Muthu, who earns his livelihood driving his
bullock-cart. Childhood friendship develops into love, and the rich-poor-divide
is threatening to separate them. There is another man too who has fallen for
Mallika. He is Chellamuthu (Livingston), son of the zamindar. Each time he
encounters Mallika he
would tell her, "I am going to marry you, and only you will be my
wife." There is Karan who plays the role of Nagu, a youth born out of
wedlock, a fact that has made him bitter and mean.
Some scenes were shot on Livingston, Vindhya, Karan, Vijaykumar and stunt artistes. Nagu has his eye on Mallika and one day he sees her at the temple festival, escorted by Chellamuthu. Nagu grabs her by the hand, bashes and ties up Chellamuthu who dared to question him. Mallika runs into the temple, but Nagu follows her there and tries to molest her. Muthusamy Gounder hears of it, rushes to the place in a fury, warding off Nagu's goons. He takes out his knife and chops off Nagu's hand. "I would have chopped off your head. But this will be a warning to others like you." Nagu was played by Karan, Vindhya played Mallika, Livingston was Chellamuthu, and Vijaykumar played the zamindar. While Jaimurugan explained the scene to the artistes, cinematographer Kichas shot the scene. The stunts were choreographed by Jaguar Thangam.
Says director Jaimuguran, "It is a film meant for family viewing, and one that will attract all the classes. In this love story, there is sentiment mixed with comedy." With shooting on at locations in Ooty, Pollachi and Coimbatore, the film is slated for a Tamil New Year release.
