Pukazh

Cast: Sharath Kumar, Poonam, Sanghavi, Ashish Vidyarthi

Director Pavithran and hero Sharath Kumar gave one of their biggest hits in 'Suryan'. They came together again in 'I love India', but the pairing failed to excite the audience this time and the film flopped at the box office. The duo comes together again after a gap of about five years in a new venture titled 'Pukazh'. With Sharath playing a dual role of father and son, the film is planned as an action-entertainer.

Sharath Kumar plays a zookeeper. Hearing from his grandmother how his father, a rich estate owner, was killed by the same friends he trusted, Sharath vows to take revenge, goes to the estate, and takes a job there as an elephant-catcher. The estate is owned by 'Villain' Ashish Vidyarthi. After the coming of Sharath of the estate, murders start taking place there, putting the fear of death in to Ashish. Poonam (was named Vyjayanthi in 'Vanna Thamizh Paattu', and this is her second film) plays Ashish's sister and Sharath's love interest, Sanghavi plays a village belle who runs a tea shop and loves Sharath too.

A stint of shooting took place in the dense forests of Manthavady in Kerala. The scene was of an elephant that had fallen into a pit, and of four Elephants trying to haul it out. Sharath was on top of one of the elephants. A risky scene, many times the elephant showed signs of restlessness and that scared the crowd that was gathered there to see the shooting. Reportedly cinematographer Ashok Kumar and his men had to pick up their lights and camera and make a run to safety.

The cast includes Poonambalam, Mohanraj, Cochin Hanifa, Delhi Ganesh, Anu, Mohan, Manorama and Srilekha. Ashish Vidyarthi, who won acclaim as a villain in Hindi films like 'Drohakal', makes his debut in a Tamil Film. He has already done a couple of Telugu films. 'My father is from Kerala and mother from Bengal. Acting in a Tamil film is a new experience for me, because here we all are treated as equals', says Vidyarthi. Pavithran had seen him in the film 'Ziddi' and offered him the role. The director remarks that Sharath and he were in touch with each other all these years, and had decided to team together only when they had got a suitable subject.

The film has music by Deva, and editing by Lenin-Vijayan. Produced by K. Ramu and K. Ramesh for their banner Sri. Venkagiriyendra Creations, shooting is almost wrapped up and the postproduction work is on.
