The movie is the outcome of
the desire of a father to make his son a hero.
Sathyan , the son, has also tried his level best to make a mark as a
hero. But he could not surmount the hurdle of lack of experience. His voice
proves a drawback for him.
It is an off - beat story. Sathyan falls in love with Kausalya . But
Kausalya is not at all for loving anybody. There is a bitter experience for her.
She had loved and married Karan, but unfortunately her husband died in their
very 'first night'. Then, how does Sathyan manage to over take the obstacle to
this obstacle to his romance. The story provides the answer.
Sathyan has a child-like face-cut. However, he scores more than the requisite
marks in action. Generally it seems he has treated the whole matter very
lightly, like own happy-go-lucky cricketers do during the training camps. It
would do him a world of good if he undergoes the indispensable training before
singing his second film.
Through and through the film, Kausalya has to depict a sullen, depressed mood.
At times, she has to express some anger too. Though small, her face is
expressive. She emotes effectively. She compels us to feel for her, when she
tries to avoid Sathyan's advances, because of her grievous predicament. She wins
own empathy easily.
Sivakumar withdraws into his shell, when he comes to know that his
daughter had become a widow. But when he learns that his daughter is going to
marry for the second time. He comes out of his self-imposed isolation. He looks
greatly relieved and reasonably happy. As usual, he seals another height in
histrionic achievement.
The role of Karan is the highlight of this film. We are unable to forget
the character played by him even after the film is over. He has done his bit in
style and aplomb. He can master many more facets of acting provided he stops
putting on more and more weight.
Vaiyapuri has been assigned a character role in the film. When he pleads
with Kausalya on behalf of Karan, his acting ability makes us exclaim.
Ilayaraja has not strained his nerves much for the film's music. But his
music has no shortcomings.
Director Babu has made many mistakes. He has to undergo further efforts and
training in writing down screenplay.
Madhampatti Sivakumar Achieved one of his purposes in life. But during that
process, he had put the audience to acid test.
Age has ventured. Youth has suffered. This is the story behind this film.
'Ilayavan' is too small and new. It falls by the wayside, in quality.
