Off and On, we do small the fragrance of various flowers, in Tamil films. It all started from 'Udhirippookkal'. Not it is 'Karuvelam Pookkal'.

No amount of felicitations would suffice for the producer and the director of this film. The movie has selected a social theme as its keystone. The story depicts the trials and tribulations experienced by the children in the matches industries at Sivakasi. A fine film indeed!

Nazar and Radhika Radhika run their family with their three children, peacefully. The peace is disturbed by the proprietors of matches industries. They lure the families of the town with job opportunities and assured wages to the children of the touch. Money wins. Child labor comes into vogue. Almost all the children go to work in the matches industries. As the children become the breadwinners for the families, the fathers become lazy easy-going and happy-go-lucky. They get addicted to intoxicating drinks. They rejoice in their lethargy and drunken brawls. The families become rudderless ships. The children get shattered emotionally. Their safety, security and future are jeopardized. Life becomes a question mark to many families.

Nazar and Radhika's acting is quite natural and life like. As we see this film, our conscience is made aware of a social tragedy of a large proportion. Our hearts grow heavy with grief. The film is full of saddening sequences. Charlie and Thalaivasal Vijay , in their character roles, have done full justice to the easy of the screenplay. A special mention must be made to Thalaivaasal Vijay. When he aggrieves for the children who do not turn up for their studies in his school, he jerks tears from our eyes. Automatically, were indulging in sharing his grief. An angst for the deplorable condition of the poor, helpless children of India files our hearts.

Music maestro Ilayaraja and Cinematographer Thankar Bachchan have stood solidly behind the director Poomani. The camera angles of Thankar Bachchan are superb. He has become one with this film. His filming is highly imaginative and innovative. He has given his heart and soul for this film. He merits any number of awards for aptly capturing the distresses of the downtrodden in his camera. Really, Ilayaraja is a musical genius, a veritable 'Isaignani'. When it comes to praise him, works fail us our hearts throb at his music. None could have scored letter music for this movie.

The courage and conviction of Poomani in directing a film such as this is highly commendable. He has thrown away the time-tested successful formula of romance-comedy-and-action into the air. On the other hand he has boldly come forward to depict the horrors of child labor in celluloid. He has highlighted with Vim, Vigour, Verve and vitality the darkness in which the children who make matches to give light to our lives are wallowing. Though the picture delineates a heavy social theme, it is not at all dull, drab or dreary. Hearty congratulations, Poomani!

Great was 'Udhirippookkal', grandeur is 'Karuvelam Pookkal'! Beyond doubts, it is another adventures guard picture.
